International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

On November 25th, it is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

It is a day to take a stand against gender-based violence and raise public awareness around such issues as well as increase both policymaking and resources dedicated to ending such discrimination. For some background, on  February 7th, 2000, the General Assembly adopted a resolution, officially designating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It was selected to honor the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo.

To help the many suffering women across the world, you can start by participating in the UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign that goes on from November 25th until December 10th.

Among its activities, there is a UN official event that will take place on November 24. You can follow the webinar online through the UN Women’s website to register in advance. You can also simply participate by using online official materials and uploading them on social media with the hashtags: #GenerationEquality, #orangetheworld, #16days, and #spreadtheword.
