Movie, "Hairspray"

"Hairspray’s history of race in America suggests that racism is an issue of attitudes
rather than policies."

Hairspray, a romantic musical comedy film, set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland presents the story of Tracy, the main character, emerging from an overweight teenager to a television superstar. However, her journey is interrupted when she becomes a victim of racial discrimination and decides to fight back. In the story, teenagers sing and dance their way past race, and excluding the main character, the other white characters remain largely innocent bystanders to the discrimination faced by the program’s black teenagers. Therefore, it suggests a clear moral message to the society saying, "racial segregation is bad; people should be judged by whom they are not by how they look and a way of understanding race, based on the story of belief with white, black people. Hence, the colorblindness of ending racial discrimination is significant and shown by the good intentions and individual acts of bravery with harmony.

At the time of Baltimore in 1962, voting wasn't allowed for African Americans due to the rejection that happened with the voters. There were also prohibitions like this: "No black person could occupy a home on a block where more than half the people were white; no white person could move into a block where more than half the residents were black." The same year the Hairspray took place, there has been a speech from Martin Luther King Jr. urging the audience to continue demonstrating against segregation at Baltimore’s Willard W. Allen Masonic Temple. Based on the history of Baltimore at approximately the same year as the movie Hairspray, it will probably be more clear in understanding why this movie was created in this way. As an audience, I was able to realize that the behind background is very important as well as the history. History can never be ignored, it's forever and cannot be changed.
