Women's Equality Day

Women's Equality Day is celebrated on August 26th.

The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. In 1920, the day stood for the result of 72 years of campaigning by a huge civil rights movement for women. Prior to movements like these, even respected thinkers such as Rousseau and Kant believed that woman’s inferior status in society was completely logical and reasonable; women were ‘beautiful’ and ‘not fit for serious employment'. Compared to the past, these days it means more than the right to vote. There has been a lot of organizations created that focuses on these issues and takes action to prevent discrimination and inequality from happening with women.

There are diverse ways to celebrate Women's Equality Day. However, one of the best things to do is spread awareness and take action to bring change to the society. Spend some time researching women's rights and spread information to other people. Another way is to register and learn to vote. You may use the Vote.Gov website for more information. With this, you could also post about it on social media. Last but not least is to visit a women's museum. Due to the pandemic, this may not be the best way, but if possible, try to go and see the story of the movements that happened with women because special exhibitions about it usually happen this time. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate in Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities.

Hope you could try to celebrate this Women's Equality Day in any kind of way that we have just mentioned!
