World Refugee Day
World Refugee Day is a day that is celebrated on June 20th to honor the courage and resilience of people forced to flee their homes due to conflict, disasters, or any kind of challenges that one may face.

Throughout the history of the establishment by the United Nations (UN) in 2001, it has marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, becoming a global moment of recognition and solidarity. Till now, it has raised awareness about millions of people being displaced and calls to action in supporting their rights, dignity, and potential to thrive. Every year, a theme is set to focus global attention by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). For 2025, the theme is Solidarity with Refugees, which focuses on opening our communities, hearts, and resources for refugees, making sure that they are included and valued in society just like others. This also builds on last year’s theme, “For a world where refugees are welcomed,” deepening the message that support isn't passive, but it’s a participation.
To celebrate and commemorate this day, communities around the world mark the day with screenings of films, cultural festivals, art exhibits, fundraisers, and any blue representation as a sign of solidarity. For example, in the Philippines, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) hosted a medical and humanitarian mission for those asylum seekers who are temporarily staying at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Then, how can we as students or just anyone celebrate and provide support to this day? Sharing a refugee’s story on social media with hashtags like #WorldRefugeeDay or #WithRefugees, or having a group of film classmates together organizing a short film featuring refugee voices. Furthermore, campaigning at school or around your neighborhood is also an idea: writing letters urging leaders to support refugee inclusion and hosting fundraisers for organizations like CARE, Plan International, etc.
